NDHS Geography Society: Exploring the World with High School Students

Welcome to the NDHS Geography Society blog! Our club, run by dedicated sixth formers, aims to ignite a passion for geography among high school students. In this post, we’ll share the exciting activities and projects we’ve been working on this academic year.

Our Mission

Here at the NDHS Geography Society, our mission is to:

• Foster an appreciation for the diverse landscapes, cultures, and environments that make up our world
• Encourage students to think critically about the challenges facing our planet
• Provide opportunities for students to engage with geography outside the classroom

Activities and Projects

Throughout the year, we have organized a variety of activities and projects for our members. Here are some highlights:

Field Trips

• Local River Study: We visited a nearby river to study its physical features, such as meanders and oxbow lakes, and to investigate the impact of human activities on water quality.

• Urban Regeneration Project: Our members explored a recently redeveloped area of our city, examining the social, economic, and environmental changes that have taken place.

Guest Speakers

We’ve been fortunate to host several guest speakers who have shared their expertise and experiences in the field of geography:

• Climate Change Expert: A local climate scientist discussed the current state of climate change and the steps we can take to mitigate its effects.
• Travel Blogger: A world-traveling blogger shared stories and photos from their adventures, inspiring our members to explore the world and learn about different cultures.

Interactive Workshops

Our club has also hosted several hands-on workshops to help students develop their geographical skills:

• Map Reading and Navigation: Students learned how to read topographic maps and use a compass to navigate in the great outdoors.

• GIS and Remote Sensing: Members were introduced to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing techniques, learning how to analyze satellite images and create digital maps.

Upcoming Events

We have some exciting events planned for the remainder of the academic year:

• Earth Day Celebration: Members will organize an Earth Day event at our school, featuring eco-friendly activities and presentations on environmental issues.
• Mountain Hike: Our club is planning a day-long hike in a nearby mountain range to explore the local flora and fauna, as well as to practice our map reading and navigation skills.
