Hard At Work in M23: What We’ve Been Up to Recently
Welcome to the NDHS Geography Society blog! As a group of dedicated sixth formers, we’ve been hard at work creating and sharing our passion for geography with fellow students at our high school in Norfolk, UK. In this post, we’ll take you through some of the exciting projects we’ve been working on related to glaciology, disease dilemmas, and tectonic hazards. Glaciology: Understanding the Frozen World
Glaciology is the study of ice and its effects on the Earth’s landscape. We’ve been exploring this fascinating subject by:
- Researching the formation and movement of glaciers
- Investigating the impact of climate change on glaciers and sea level rise
- Creating models of glacial landscapes, such as moraines and icebergs
Glacier Formation and Movement
To better understand how glaciers form and move, we’ve been studying the processes of accumulation and ablation. Accumulation is when snowfall adds to the glacier’s mass, while ablation is when the glacier loses mass through melting or sublimation.

Climate Change and Sea Level Rise

We’ve been examining the relationship between glacial melting and sea level rise by analyzing data and creating visualizations.

Disease dilemmas are complex issues that involve the spread of illness and the factors that influence it. We’ve been investigating these dilemmas by:
- Mapping the spread of various diseases around the world
- Analyzing the social, economic, and environmental factors that contribute to disease outbreaks
- Discussing potential solutions to mitigate the impact of diseases on society
Mapping Disease Spread
Using GIS software, we’ve created interactive maps that show the spread of diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and COVID-19. These maps help us visualize the global reach of these diseases and identify areas in need of targeted interventions.
Factors Contributing to Disease Outbreaks
To better understand why some areas are more prone to disease outbreaks, we’ve been analyzing the various factors that contribute to their spread. These include:

By examining these factors, we can work towards more effective interventions and policies to combat disease.
Tectonic Hazards: Unearthing the Earth’s Powerful Forces
Tectonic hazards are natural events related to the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates. We’ve been delving into the world of earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis by:

- Examining the impact of tectonic hazards on human populations
- Discussing ways to mitigate the risks associated with tectonic hazards
The Science of Tectonic Hazards
We’ve been learning about the Earth’s lithosphere and the forces that cause tectonic plates to move. By understanding the science behind these events, we can better predict and prepare for them.
